In May of 1997, Queen's established a rotating specialty clinic
in Hilo. The clinic was developed under the auspices of the Queen's
Physicians Group and the East Hawaii IPA, a physician IPA in Hilo.
The purpose of the clinic was to:
- provide a central location for specialty services,
- improve community access to specialty care,
- improve patient care coordination between the patient's primary
care provider and medical consultants.
Initially, the program brought together many of the specialists
who were going to Hilo. In time, the program grew in popularity
and requests for other specialty services were made.
In the first year, Queen's successfully recruited Invasive Cardiology,
Infectious Disease, Pulmonology, Endocrinology, and Oncology to
the community.
Diagnostic Laboratory Services has trained personnel on duty at
all times.
