Geriatric Services at Queen's Medical Center was initiated in 1999 to support the complex needs of the medically frail elderly from hospital admission through discharge. Since that time, Geriatric Services has grown in response to the ever increasing demand of Hawaii's exploding senior population.
Today, Queen's Geriatric Services consists of a team of geriatric trained physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and support staff providing comprehensive care for our kupuna both rich and poor, regardless of where the patient resides. Services include:
Hospital care of medically and socially complex elders
Outpatient care for community dwelling seniors
Medical care for dying patients with emotional support for their loved ones
Care of the homebound frail
Case management for frail individuals who live in the community
Free van transportation to Queen's hospital appointments
LifeLine emergency alert system
The Geriatric team is well-known in the community for their expertise in caring for the complex needs of Hawaii's aging population. They reach out to the community with education on different aspects of senior care. They continue to support the University of Hawaii medical school by teaching the physicians and nurses at all stages of training in caring for the frail elderly. They organize and sponsor a biennial geriatric full day conference to educate health care professionals in the community, and regularly raise awareness of geriatric issues by engaging in community wellness and health events throughout the state.
Geriatric Services does not cover its cost because of the complexity of senior issues and the time needed to coordinate and care for their patients. However, the improvement in life quality for our kupuna and their families is priceless.
Donations to Geriatric Services will be used to:
Support housecall services
Educate new geriatricians
Support free van transportation
Leave a legacy of respect and an appreciation of our kupuna
