About Philanthropy

Every day at The Queen’s Health System, patients and their families look to us for hope, healing and better health. Whether it’s for routine needs or serious health concerns, we care for the people of Hawai‘i as if they were part of our ‘ohana. This is important work, and we can’t do it alone. From all of us at The Queen’s Health System, we say mahalo for your continued generosity and support.

Our Founders Legacy

Established in 1859, The Queen’s Medical Center is the oldest hospital in the United States with royal founders. Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV envisioned a hospital to stem the tide of disease that was ravaging the Hawaiian population. Because the legislature was in a weak financial position, the King and Queen sought to personally raise the funds needed to build the hospital. They solicited door-to-door along the byways, docks, businesses, and residences of Honolulu. The royal couple exceeded their goal in just over a month raising $13,530. In recognition of her passion and vision in establishing a hospital, the King and his cabinet named the new hospital “The Queen’s Hospital.” Throughout Queen’s history, it has been our mission, “to fulfill the intent of Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV to provide in perpetuity quality health care services to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians and all of the people of Hawai‘i.”
