Food Services

The culinary team for Food and Nutrition Services is led by Angie Koclanes, General Manager, and an accomplished chef. The culinary team utilizes their combined experiences in fine dining, catering and health care to offer healthy innovative foods for patients, families and staff. We are dedicated to serving you high quality, healthy foods. All foods prepared in our kitchen are made with Gluten Free shoyu and we take pride in serving Local First fresh produce from Hawaii Island.

For those patients that are hospitalized, the Expressly for You Dining® program allows patients to select a variety of foods for their meals and is based on the long-standing practice of table-side service in restaurants. For this “bedside” style personal service, the host/hostess takes the patient’s meal orders at their bedside daily to enhance their dining experience. Food is made fresh to order and delivered by our friendly food service team.

Guest meals for visiting family and friends are available for purchase. Dining with the patient is encouraged unless there are special circumstances.

Our goal in 2018 is to have all campus foods labeled, including the top 8 food allergens, for easy identification to meet your specific dietary needs.

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)

Currently, there is limited outpatient nutrition therapy available.

Nutrition Services

Our nutrition services are provided by a Registered Dietician Nutritionist (RDN).

Patient Meal Services

As part of admission to the hospital, every patient receives a doctor’s order for what type of diet should be eaten. A "regular" diet means that there are no diet restrictions for health reasons. Patients on regular diets can select choices from the daily menu. Menu items are chosen by a committee of dietitians and food preparation specialists to ensure a variety of healthy foods to suit popular tastes.

Special Diet Planning

Medical conditions sometimes require special diets and patients with these restrictions do have the option to choose their own meals, with recommendations from their care providers. Special diets are mainly implemented in the hospital, but some patients may need to continue the diet after they return home. When requested, dietitians can provide information about special diets to patients and their families to assist in at-home recovery.

Special diets that doctors order for their patients may include:

  • Cardiac
  • Consistent Carbohydrates (for Diabetes)
  • Low Sodium
  • Post-gastrectomy
  • Modified Texture Dysphagia diets (for swallowing and/or chewing difficulties)
