About Us

The Hemodialysis team at The Queen's Medical Center works with you and your doctor to determine if you need treatment. Hemodialysis treatment is based on several factors:

  • Overall health
  • Kidney function
  • Signs and symptoms
  • Quality of life
  • Personal preferences

Kidneys serve an important function for your body’s health:

  • Controlling the production of red blood cells
  • Balancing the body's fluids
  • Releasing hormones that regulate blood pressure
  • Removing drugs and other waste products from the body
  • Producing an active form of vitamin D that promotes strong, healthy bones

However, when your kidneys are not working properly, you may need to seek treatment. There are three types of treatments available:

  • Hemodialysis
  • Kidney transplantation
  • Peritoneal dialysis

Hemodialysis is a treatment, often performed multiple times per week, which filters your blood and removes extra fluids for those suffering from kidney failure. This process can take up to three to four hours per treatment session.
