Port Placement

The Queen’s Medical Center - West Oahu provides convenient port placement services close to home for patients living in West Oahu.

A port allows safe and easy repeated access to the bloodstream, which causes less vessel damage from repeated intravenous (IV) procedures. The port is placed by a doctor in the operating room. Placement of the port is usually under the skin, just below the collarbone. You will be able to go home the same day of your procedure.

Port uses may include:

  • Providing chemotherapy
  • Drawing blood for tests
  • Providing intravenous (IV) medication or fluids

Prior to surgery:

  • Let your doctor know if you are taking any blood thinners. You will need to stop taking them prior to the port insertion
  • Stop eating and drinking 8 hours prior to your procedure
  • Check-in at Admitting desk, 90 minutes prior to your procedure. Admitting is located in the hospital lobby
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home

If you are scheduled for a port placement, a nurse will call you to ensure that you are fully prepared, but you are welcome to contact us at 808-691-3289 before your procedure to ask any additional questions.
