Maternity Care

At Queen's North Hawaii Community Hospital Health & Wellness Women's Center, we believe that all pregnant women deserve excellent maternity care provided by a team of certified nurse midwives and obstetricians. This team approach allows us to create a personalized plan of prenatal and birth care for each woman and her family. This short video below, created by the American College of Nurse-Midwives, explains how certified nurse midwives work in hospitals in collaboration with OB/GYN physicians.

We are dedicated to providing you with quality and compassionate health care, which blends the highest quality medical care with a focus on education, prevention, and emotional support. We encourage your active participation in all aspects of your care. We support your desires for your birth and will work together to ensure the best possible experience for you, your family and your new baby.

Family Birthing Units

The Family Birthing Unit within Queen's North Hawaii Community Hospital provides quality patient care to all pregnant women (after 20 weeks gestation) and all newborns. Our Family Birthing Unit consists of five spacious birthing suites with hardwood floors and large windows that offer views of beautiful Waimea.

Labor and Delivery

We strive to make your delivery the best possible experience it can be. Our family-centered care consists of progressive and safe labor practices. Laboring women can move around, eat and drink, and use the shower, or labor in a jacuzzi for hydrotherapy. We have a special blend of aromatherapy created just for our laboring moms to use while in the tub. Acupuncture is also available on a limited basis.

We are known for our gentle births, placing the newborn directly on the maternal abdomen for skin-to-skin bonding, known as "The Sacred Hour." The infant may stay there for up to two hours, with the staff attending to the new mother's needs as well as the infant's needs. This practice leads to babies that are more content.

Infant Security and Visitors

The security of your infant is our main focus and our policy is that the infant rooms-in with the mother. Most procedures performed on the infant are done in the room. Except for the laboring woman's support team, general visiting hours are from 8:30 am - 8:30 pm. We recommend no more than four visitors at any time. Visitors must check-in at the nurses' station outside the Family Birthing Unit.

Visitation is limited to healthy visitors only (no coughs, colds or sneezes). The only children allowed are big brothers or big sisters of the newborn.
