What To Expect

When you come to the Emergency Department, our goal is to provide you with the highest quality of care according to the highest professional standards and efficiency, all while making your visit as comfortable as possible. The following may help you understand how the department works to provide you and the rest of our community with the best care.

Triage and Registration

Patients arriving at The Queen’s Medical Center – West O‘ahu Emergency Department will be greeted by an Emergency Technician or a Patient Service Coordinator. Patients will then be triaged by a Registered Nurse who will quickly assess their medical condition. Patients with critical health issues are immediately escorted to a treatment room. Those with non-critical health issues and those with minor illnesses or injuries may be directed to our “STAR” area, or may be asked to complete their registration while a room is being prepared.

STAR

Part of the Emergency Department is called STAR. Patients with minor injuries or illnesses may be treated in this area. It is open from 9:00 – 3:00 am and is staffed with board-certified doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and registered nurses. STAR patients usually go through the same process as patients in the main Emergency Department; however, because of the nature of health issues seen in STAR, patients go through the process in a shorter time.

The Emergency Department has developed criteria for various types of illnesses and conditions that may be treated in this area, but are not limited to: colds, ear pain, insect bites, rashes, simple lacerations, sore throats, sprains and toothaches.

Occasionally, patients may appear to meet the criteria for STAR, but an Emergency Department physician may determine that they need to be seen in the main Emergency Department based on an initial evaluation.
