Kauaʻi Lifeguard Discharged from Queen’s After Shark Bite

Kauaʻi lifeguard Chance Swanson was discharged from The Queen’s Medical Center after surviving a shark bite at Hanalei Bay on November 5.

Swanson was bitten by a shark that severed a major artery in his leg. He was initially treated at Wilcox Medical Center before being transported to The Queen’s Medical Center, Hawaiʻi’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, where a multidisciplinary team of surgeons and other medical professionals performed seven procedures, including reconstructive surgery, to repair damaged blood vessels, muscle, and soft tissue.

Swanson will continue his recovery on Kauaʻi and thanked his rescuers, caregivers, and community for their support.
