About Molokai General Hospital

Originally managed by the Grace Episcopal Church, our hospital was established in 1932 as Shingle Memorial Hospital. It was incorporated as Molokai Community Hospital in 1949. Funded by the State of Hawaii and many community contributions, the hospital moved to a new facility in Kaunakakai in 1963, and became known as Molokai General Hospital.

However, by the late 1980s, the community owned and operated hospital could no longer survive in the changing health care environment. In 1987, The Queen’s Health System stepped in to help by adopting it into its family of companies, and thereby extending its mission to the Island of Molokai. In 2008, an extensive redevelopment project was completed to update and expand Molokai General Hospital’s facilities to better meet the health care needs of the community.

The Queen’s brand of health care began in 1859 with the founding of The Queen’s Hospital by Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV in response to the diseases that were decimating the Hawaiian population. The Queen’s Hospital became The Queen’s Medical Center in 1967, and The Queen’s Health System umbrella company was established in 1985 to provide expanded health care services and programs to the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Basin. Today, The Queen’s Health System has extended its mission not only to Molokai, but to the West Oahu region by opening The Queen’s Medical Center – West Oahu, and to Hawaii Island through North Hawaii Community Hospital.
