Food Services

Under the direction of Executive Chef, Courtney Barry, Queen’s – Punchbowl is dedicated to changing today’s landscape of hospital food. Our team implements their culinary knowledge from fine dining, hotel and restaurant experience and applies these practices to our health care food culture. We focus on providing a menu with the highest quality food that showcases our culturally diverse Queen’s ohana. When you visit Queen’s – Punchbowl, either as a patient or a guest, your dining experience will be healthy and full of flavor.

For those patients that are hospitalized, the At Your Request Room Service Dining® program provides daily meals choices from menus designed to enhance the patient dining experience. Family members may also order their loved one’s meals from home via Concierge Services. Concierge Services is available from 6:30 am-9:45 pm to take meal orders. Call 808-691-4331, Option 1.

Guest meals for visiting family and friends are available for purchase. Dining with the patient is encouraged unless there are special circumstances.

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)

  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) perform personalized Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) counseling to help with food choices for health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, weight management, digestive problems, and oncology.
  • RDNs work with patients to decide on a practical and realistic food plan to fit individualized food preferences, health needs, and lifestyle. Current diet, activity, and medical background will be assessed to determine comprehensive nutritional needs.
  • A physician referral is required to ensure that pertinent medical history can guide the RDN in patient education needs.

The Queen’s Medical Center offers an exclusive diabetes education program called Managing Diabetes with Balancing Skills.

  • This program is designed for all individuals managing diabetes, whether newly diagnosed or for those in need of new strategies for successful wellness management.
  • Recognized by the American Diabetes Association, the program adheres to national standards for quality comprehensive education on the many aspects of diabetes care and lifestyle management.
  • Our professional expertise provides experience in diabetes care and education including Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists, Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists, and Advanced Practice Nurses.
  • This program is interactive and engaging, giving patients the opportunity to practice their healthy dietary skills in everyday life.
  • Once the program is complete, ongoing support is provided through office visits and follow up phone calls to help monitor success.

Patient Meal Planning

  • As part of admission to the hospital, every patient receives a doctor’s order for dietary guidelines to be followed during their stay.
  • A “regular” diet means that there are no diet restrictions for health reasons. Patients on regular diets can select choices from Queen’s daily menu.
  • Menu items are chosen by a committee of dietitians and food preparation specialists to ensure a variety of healthy foods to suit popular tastes.

Special Diets

  • Patients with medical conditions sometimes require special diets.  Patients with these restrictions have the option to choose their own meals, with recommendations from their care providers.
  • Special diets are mainly implemented in the hospital, but some patients may need to continue the diet after they return home.
  • When requested, dietitians can provide information about special diets to patients and their families to assist in at-home recovery.

Special diets may include:
