Helpful Tips for Receiving Your Prescriptions
- Discharge and Emergency Department prescriptions are processed 24 hours a day. Bring your health insurance card when picking up medications. Refills may be called in one or two days in advance to avoid long wait times.
- The Pharmacy phone number is listed on the medication label.
- Be ready to give your name and prescription number, located on the left side of the label. Remaining refills are noted at the bottom right corner of the medication label. If there are no refills left, your physician will need to write a new prescription.
- Do not request refills until you have less than a one week supply remaining.
- Most drug plans do not allow pharmacies to refill a prescription too early.
- It is important to refill prescriptions before you run out of medications
Intravenous Admixture Service
The Queen’s Medical Center IV Room in the central Pharmacy is staffed by a team of highly trained pharmacists and technicians who prepare the intravenous fluids used throughout the hospital. IV medications include antibiotics, chemotherapy, electrolytes, and nutritional solutions that are individually tailored to each patient.
Queen’s pharmacists utilize an ongoing quality assurance process to evaluate the pharmaceutical products and ensure their stability, sterility, solubility, incompatibilities, storage and proper labeling. Proper disposal is another key consideration for the protection of patients, personnel and the environment. Queen’s follows guidelines put forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), OSHA, JCAHO and other organizations.
