The Queen’s Health Systems (Queen’s) celebrated a major milestone in the emergency department expansion at The Queen’s Medical Center –West Oʻahu (Queen’s-West) with a topping-off ceremony of the new three-story facility.
Representatives from Queen’s, Queen’s-West, and various construction partners gathered on Friday, October 30 to mark the placement of the final structural beam.
The ceremony recognizes a major achievement in the ongoing expansion project designed to meet the growing demand for emergency and inpatient care in Central and West Oʻahu, while enhancing the hospital’s ability to deliver timely, high-quality care to the communities it serves.
Located in ʻEwa, Queen’s-West operates the second-busiest emergency department in the state, following The Queen’s Medical Center – Punchbowl. Over the past five years, emergency department visits at Queen’s-West have grown by an average of five percent annually.
“As our community grows, so does the need for timely, accessible emergency care. This addition will provide new emergency care spaces and advanced imaging capabilities designed to support faster diagnosis and treatment from the moment patients arrive,” said Robin Kalohelani, chief operating officer for The Queen’s Medical Center – West Oʻahu and The Queen’s Medical Center – Wahiawā. “We are grateful to our physicians, nurses, staff, construction partners and everyone who has helped bring this vision closer to reality.”
The new 80,000-square-foot facility will more than double the size of the hospital’s current emergency department, adding 32 care spaces for a total of 55. The expanded department will feature adaptable, acuity- and condition-specific care spaces designed to support safe, efficient treatment for patients with a wide range of medical needs.
The expansion will also add two floors of inpatient care, featuring 48 private patient rooms on the second and third floors. With these additions, Queen’s-West will have a total of 152 patient rooms, further strengthening the hospital’s capacity to care for the growing West Oʻahu community.
The expansion is expected to be completed in late 2028.
