HONOLULU – The Queen’s Medical Center is pleased to announce that it has been reverified as a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) until August 2024.  Queen’s remains the first and only Level I Trauma Center in Hawaii and the Pacific.  This verification provides validation that the care received at Queen’s meets the highest standards of the ACS.

The Queen’s Emergency Department and Trauma Center averages 160 visits daily, and more than 58,000 emergency and 2,800 trauma visits annually.

“The Queen’s Medical Center is honored to hold its Level I reverification status,” said Jason Chang, President of The Queen’s Medical Center and The Queen’s Health System’s Chief Operating Officer.  “This distinction signifies our commitment to the people of Hawaii that when seconds count, Queen’s is prepared to provide comprehensive care for every aspect of injury using advanced life-saving technologies and the highest level of care and compassion.”

“The entire Queen’s family and the State of Hawaii can share in this proud and remarkable achievement,” said Dr. Michael Hayashi, Trauma Medical Director of The Queen’s Medical Center. “Collaboration across all specialties was particularly impressive to the review team; even for Level I standards. Our expertise and dedication to high quality patient care supports the Queen’s mission and fulfills our charge as the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Hawaii.”

The verification process is designed to assist hospitals in the evaluation and improvement of trauma care and to provide an objective, external review of institutional capabilities and performance. A team experienced in trauma care assesses the commitment, readiness, resources, policies, patient care, performance improvement, and other relevant features of the program.  Level I Trauma Centers provide the highest level of patient care across the injury continuum from prevention through rehabilitation.
