The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at The Queen’s Medical Center Neuroscience Institute is accredited by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a Level 3 Epilepsy Center. Level 3 epilepsy centers are specialized epilepsy centers that meet guidelines to provide high quality neurodiagnostic evaluations and medical, neuropsychological, and psychosocial services to diagnose and treat patients with refractory epilepsy.

At the Queen’s Epilepsy Center, we have a full spectrum of diagnostic and treatment options so that patients in Hawai‘i do not typically have to travel to the mainland for advanced care. We are able to help with:

  • Advanced testing to confirm epilepsy diagnosis or find another cause for symptoms.
  • Medical management of epilepsy including expertise on the most current medications available.
  • Non-medication therapies including neurostimulators and epilepsy surgery.
  • Seizures secondary to genetic disorders or other rare epilepsies.
  • Education about effects of epilepsy and seizure medications on pregnancy and the developing baby.
  • Epilepsy management at different stages of life, including the adolescent-to-adult transition and geriatric epilepsy care.

Should You Seek Evaluation at a Certified Epilepsy Center?

You should seek evaluation at a certified epilepsy center if:
  • You have tried two or more medications and are still having seizures
  • You or your doctors are unsure of the diagnosis
  • You would like further information on the most up-to-date treatment options
  • You continue to take an older seizure medication that has long-term side effects

Multidisciplinary Epilepsy Team

Our specialty trained team works closely with neuropsychologists, social workers, psychologists, and dietitians to provide the full spectrum of epilepsy care. For more advanced medical needs, our Level 3 Comprehensive Epilepsy Center team has access to the full clinical services of an entire system of care in The Queen’s Health Systems.
