Occupational Therapy

The Queen’s Medical Center Rehabilitation Services Department provides Occupational Therapy for patients in outpatient clinics across the isles as well as for patients who are admitted to the hospital, called inpatient rehabilitation services. Occupational Therapy (OT) focuses on facilitating participation in everyday living. All of Queen’s Occupational Therapists are licensed medical professionals. Occupational Therapist Assistants are also utilized in some settings to execute individual care plans created by the Occupational Therapist.

Outpatient Occupational Therapy

Outpatient Occupational Therapy Services are provided for persons seeking to restore prior levels of function following injury, illness or disease. Occupational Therapists evaluate every patient to create an individualized treatment plan. At the time of the evaluation, your therapist will determine your underlying problem(s) that is interfering with your ability to function normally. They will then create a care plan to address the problems, including goals to help track progress. Most episodes of care are 6-8 sessions, often 1-2 x a week. Each treatment session is approximately 40 minutes long and all sessions are 1:1 with the licensed individual providing your care.

Outpatient Occupational Therapy services include:

Inpatient Occupational Therapy

Our team of highly skilled therapists at The Queen’s Medical Center specializes in acute care rehabilitation for adults, youth and children who are hospitalized due to illness or injury, or who have had surgery such as joint replacement or spinal surgery.

We work with the medical team to improve function and mobility, through individualized therapy, in order for patients to be safely discharged to their home or to another facility. Caregiver training is also provided to support the family or caregiver once the patient is discharged from Queen’s.

Inpatient Occupational Therapy is provided in various areas of the hospital, from the emergency room to the intensive care area, or on one of many acute care floors of the medical center, and include:

How to Access Queen’s Rehabilitation

Outpatient Rehabilitation Services:

Most therapy services are initiated via referral from either a physician, APRN, or Physician Assistant. In Hawaii, laws allow for patients to access Physical Therapy, and Speech Therapy without a referral from a Physician. While legal, not all insurance plans cover PT and Speech services if they are initiated without a referral. Please contact us and we will help you determine if your insurance plan allows for you to receive our services without a referral, or if you should seek out a referral from an approved provider. All Occupational Therapy services require a physician referral to initiate care*.

Referral forms for therapy are available here:

*Queen’s accepts all therapy referral forms, including those intended for non-Queen’s clinics. For example, if your doctor completed a therapy referral for company “x” in the community, and you elect to receive your services from Queen’s, in most instances we will be able to accept that referral.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Services

In the hospital setting, therapy services are initiated by members of the care team who will determine what types of rehabilitation services you will require prior to and after discharge. If you or a loved one are hospitalized and you believe rehabilitation services may be beneficial, please consult with your care team providers to determine the best course of action.
