Inpatient Rehabilitation Services

The Queen’s Medical Center offers acute care rehabilitation services including occupational, physical and speech therapies, as part of our patients’ care plan. All services are initiated by a physician’s order and are available 7 days a week for adult inpatients.

Evaluation and treatment include, but are not limited to:

Our Team

The Queen’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Services team consists of physical therapists and assistants, occupational therapists and assistants, speech-language pathologists and rehabilitation assistants. Many of our caring staff members have advanced degrees and certifications to specifically address the complex problems faced in the acute care environment.

The team collaborates with members of patients’ care teams, including physicians, surgeons, nurses, social workers, case managers and others to ensure that all patients’ functional needs are addresses and improved with a safe outcome being key. This is accomplished through individual therapy and caregiver training sessions designed to support the family or caregiver once the patients is discharged from the hospital.

Our Services

The Rehabilitation team treats patients who have had surgeries such as a joint replacement, spinal surgery, amputation, neurosurgery, organ transplant, cardiac surgery and other surgical conditions. Patients who are hospitalized with a traumatic injury such as fractures or brain injuries, strokes, cardiac conditions, cancer care or pneumonia all benefit from seeing a physical and/or occupational therapist along with a speech language pathologist, if necessary.

We treat patients in various areas of the hospital from the emergency room to the intensive care unit or one of many acute care floors of the medical center. Our therapists specialize in acute care therapy for patients who have become ill or injured and are hospitalized.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Services:

Most therapy services are initiated via referral from either a physician, APRN, or Physician Assistant. In Hawaii, laws allow for patients to access Physical Therapy, and Speech Therapy without a referral from a Physician. While legal, not all insurance plans cover PT and Speech services if they are initiated without a referral. Please contact us and we will help you determine if your insurance plan allows for you to receive our services without a referral, or if you should seek out a referral from an approved provider. All Occupational Therapy services require a physician referral to initiate care*.

Referral forms for therapy are available here:

*Queen’s accepts all rehab referral forms, including those intended for non-Queen’s clinics. For example, if your doctor completed a therapy referral for company “x” in the community, and you elect to receive your services from Queen’s, in most instances we will be able to accept that referral.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Services

In the hospital setting, therapy services are initiated by members of the care team who will determine what types of rehabilitation services you will require prior to and after discharge. If you or a loved one are hospitalized and you believe rehabilitation services may be beneficial, please consult with your care team providers to determine the best course of action.
